Improving access to early-stage lung cancer care in Europe There are stark differences between European countries when it comes to both the reimbursement of, and access to, new treatments for patients with early-stage lung cancer. There are also differences in reimbursement times and indications between the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Researchers from Amsterdam UMC Cancer Center Amsterdam analysed the landscape, and their results are published today in The Lancet Regional Health Europe as part of a series on the latest developments in the treatment of this lung cancer.

Measuring tumours quickly and precisely thanks to AI The CAESAR research group at Amsterdam UMC have developed an AI tool that automatically shows liver tumours on CT scans of patients with colon cancer that has spread to the liver, giving doctors quick insight into the size of the tumours. The fact that the tool is now being researched in the doctor's daily practice is good news, as many AI tools are stuck in the development phase. AI system helps recognize early stage of oesophageal cancer A new AI system can help endoscopists recognize oesophageal cancer early, according to a study by Amsterdam UMC and Eindhoven University of Technology. "The sooner you recognize oesophageal cancer, the better the outcome for the patient," says Jacques Bergman, professor of Endoscopy at Amsterdam UMC. "We are therefore very happy with this help from artificial intelligence."

Keyhole surgery safe and less invasive for patients with pancreatic cancer Thanks to a large international study, keyhole surgery has been shown to be a safe and less invasive option for pancreatic cancer patients undergoing surgery. These results are published today in The Lancet Regional Health Europe. Professor Mohammad Abu Hilal, from the University of Southampton and a surgeon in Brescia, Italy: “the biggest news is that we now have strong scientific evidence that keyhole surgery is safe for left-sided pancreatic cancer.”

Combination therapy outperforms chemotherapy in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia Chemotherapy has been the most effective treatment to date for young and fit patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). The disease is the most common form of leukaemia in the Western world, causing a substantial health burden on patients and society. It is currently incurable. Research led by researchers from Cologne University, Amsterdam UMC and Copenhagen University, now shows that a chemofree drug-combination therapy is more effective and produces fewer side effects. The results of this study are published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
