According to the Doctorate Regulations VU Amsterdam it is compulsory to obtain 30 ECTS during your PhD Trajectory with the intention of clearly and prominently demonstrating the results of the doctoral training programme.
At the start of your PhD trajectory you have been registered in Hora Finita and after you have been admitted to the PhD trajectory you have access to the dashboard in Hora Finita. Here you must fill in your portfolio, including all your education activities and the corresponding proofs of attendance/certificates.
One ECTS point stands for 28 (study) hours. You can obtain credits by doing courses, trainings or through activities. The number of study hours (and therefore ECTS points) is determined in advance by the training institute.
VUmc/VU: 30 ECTS
According to article 14 Doctorate Regulations VU Amsterdam the PhD candidate shall devote at least 30 ECTS (840 hours) to training. This also applies if you are a physician-researchers (arts-onderzoekers) or other medical employee, and you are pursuing a PhD alongside your regular work.
The training programme consists of compulsory courses, required by the VU and by your research institute, as well as free choice parts, like courses and practical training aimed at acquiring specific academic skills, general scientific skills or transferable skills. It may also include other activities such as attending conferences, seminars and master classes, participation in retreats and journal clubs, teaching, and publications. Courses can be taken at the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School or elsewhere. Publications may, but do not need to be related to the PhD project.
At the start of the PhD trajectory, you and your supervisor agreed on your Training Plan; this forms the basis of your portfolio. Deviations from your original Training Plan in your portfolio are allowed, as long as you still meet the VU/VUmc and research institutes' specific requierements. When in doubt, please check this with the PhD Committee of your research institute. It is crucial that progress in your training and education is assessed regularly, or at least every year by you and your supervisor.
Since you have been admitted to the PhD trajectory you have access to the dashboard in Hora Finita. Here you must fill in your portfolio, including all your education activities and the corresponding proofs of attendance and/or certificates. Our advice is to do this regularly, to avoid that at the end of your trajectory it will take more time and effort to gather all necessary information. So have your portfolio approved as soon as you have met the appointments according to the training plan.
Note 1: You can only upload your manuscript for assessment, after your portfolio has been approved.
Note 2: Check the VU/VUmc specific requirements to the Doctorate Regulations VU Amsterdam (see in 'Downloads').
