To offer people with MS a normal daily life without experiencing limitations caused by their MS. That is our goal. The MS Center Amsterdam is amongst the worldwide leading centers in research and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Much progress has been made in the past 25 years, for example more than fifteen drugs have been developed to slow down the disease. However, more research is needed as we want to really stop the progression of the disease. In the upcoming years we will concentrate our work on realizing personalized treatment: the right medicine at the right dose at the right time.

About

Over 100 researchers and caregivers from 13 different departments of Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc) are dedicated to provide optimal care and perform innovative research. They cover many different facets of the disease. Our center is the largest expertise center for MS in the Netherlands and the number one national referral center.

Research

The main goal of the MS Center Amsterdam is to enable the retainment of full function for people with MS, to ensure high quality of life and optimal participation in society. Our translational research therefore focuses on gaining more knowledge on disease mechanisms in order to uncover and develop interventions that will halt progression of the disease and restore function in people with MS.

Projects

Stopping the progression of MS

Over time, people with MS develop physical complaints and can have problems with their thinking (cognition). These two characteristics of MS have a major impact on a patient’s quality of life. Why do people with MS continue to deteriorate? How can disease progression be stopped? The researchers at the MS Center Amsterdam want to find answers to these questions.

Power of data: develop patient profiles for personalized treatment

MS is unpredictable. Every day, people with MS can be confronted with new limitations. With the project 'power of data', the MS Centrum Amsterdam wants to ensure that people with MS only experience minimal limitations from their disease. In this project we collect a lot of data from people with MS. This data is stored in an innovative database. By 2030, the project should ultimately lead to patient profiles i.e. enabling us to predict the patient’s course of MS and the most effective medicine.

Personalized dosing

For years MS patients have received standardized treatment with standardized dosing. With this line of research, researchers from the MS Center Amsterdam want to achieve not only personalized treatments for people with MS, but also personalized dosing per treatment.

Researchers

Executive & general board

The executive board consists of general director professor Bernard Uitdehaag and scientific director professor Elga de Vries. Besides the two directors the general board of the MS Center Amsterdam consists of senior researchers from seven different departments where MS research is performed.
