Grant (€50.000) for exceptionally talented researchers who are in the first 5 years after obtaining a PhD-degree and want to start their own research line (VENI-profile) or who want to further develop their own research line (VIDI-profile, max 8 years after PhD graduation).

The AGEM research institute supports research talent that conducts research in the field of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Endocrinology and Metabolism. Researchers whose project(s) may be relevant for other research lines within AGEM are especially encouraged to apply for the AGEM talent development grant.

The AGEM research institute will provide a mentoring program for exceptionally talented researchers and targets researchers in two different career stages:

1. VENI profile:

For talented researchers who are in the first 5 years after obtaining their PhD degree, who want to start their own research line. This program includes:

  • €50.000 free to spend as long as it benefits the proposed research proposal. The grant cannot be used to cover the applicant’s own salary.
  • Guidance in developing one’s own research line.

2. VIDI profile:

For exceptionally talented researchers who are in the first 8 years after obtaining their PhD degree, to strengthen their recently initiated own research line. This program includes:

  • €50.000 free to spend as long as it benefits the proposed research proposal. The grant cannot be used to cover the applicant’s own salary.
  • Guidance in further developing one’s own research line.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for enrollment in the AGEM talent development program:

  • The researcher must belong to the top 10% of his peer group, and in the first 5 (VENI profile) or 8 (VIDI profile) year(s) after obtaining his/her PhD-degree (The extension rule of NWO is applicable).
  • The researcher is (or will be) embedded in a research group of a principal investigator (PI) from the Amsterdam UMC who is a member of the AGEM research institute (responsible AGEM PI).
  • The researcher will need to provide a signed agreement from the responsible AGEM PI with whom the researcher is (or will be) embedded stating that the researcher will be a senior author on the manuscript(s) generated in the project.
  • For MD-PhD researchers: the researcher can provide a signed agreement from the head of his/her department stating that at least 0.2 FTE of the researcher’s time will be devoted to research
  • The applicant must have an appointment at the Amsterdam UMC for the full duration of the proposed research project. This applies also to clinical applicants.
  • If relevant, the applicant will need to provide approved DEC and/or METC documents at the start of the project.
  • The project needs to start no later than August 1st 2024.

The application should include:

  • Application form:
    - Personal information
    - Research proposal (not more than 3 A4)
    - Budget specification
  • Motivation letter of applicant (Max. 1x A4)
  • Evidence Based CV of applicant with:
    - Narrative academic profile (Max. 700 words)
    - List of key output (Max. 10 items)
    - Description why this represents the key output (Max. 700 words)
  • Signed agreement from the responsible AGEM PI (see Eligibility requirements)
  • Signed agreement from the head of the department (for practicing MDs only) (see Eligibility requirements)
  • Proof of appointment at the Amsterdam UMC until the end date of the proposed research project

Selection procedure

The AGEM research board will judge the applications on how well the researchers and the proposal fit within the goals and aims of the AGEM research institute.

Nominated applicants will be invited for an interview that will take place on April 18th, 2024, between 15:30 - 18:30hrs.
