Carlo Schuengel is Vice-Director of the Amsterdam Public Health research institute and Professor of Clinical Child and Family Studies at the VU Amsterdam.

Carlo is trained as a social science researcher (PhD 1996). He started his career as an assistant professor Child and Family studies at the Leiden University (1999). Since 1999 he works as a researcher at the VU Amsterdam. In the meantime he was also the associate Dean Research of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences at the VU Amsterdam (2012-2019). He became the vice director of the Amsterdam Public Health research institute in February 2019.

The aim of his research is to contribute insight into family relationships and the development of mental health and resilience, and into interventions that can support at risk parents and other caregivers in fostering high quality relationships with children. Currently, his research is connected to the Generations2 longitudinal pregnancy cohort study, and intervention studies in partnership with intervention services and care organizations that support families, children, and people with disabilities.
