Focus of research

Orthopedic Imaging
In a longstanding cooperation with the depts. of Radiology, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Orthopedics of the AMC we develop and evaluate 4D-imaging equipment for analysis of 3D patterns of movement of the wrist. This technology enables acquisition of novel 4D diagnostic information which facilitates treatment decision making in wrist problems. Current clinical research using 4D imaging is focused on measurement of dynamic joint space thickness as well as the effect of surgical interventions on 3D motion patterns of the wrist joint.
In a second orthopedic application we develop image based surgical planning and per-operative image analysis methods for minimally invasive corrective osteotomy procedures. This application has been developed in cooperation with our European consortium partners in the MEDIATE project. Currently, a multitude of applications emerges based on technology developed in MEDIATE, including planning of knee surgery and designing patient specific implants.
In cooperation with the Internal Medicine and the Radiology departments we recently started a cooperation with the VUMC on the assessment of bone mineral density in obese patients. Dedicated imaging protocols are being developed to increase the accuracy of bone mineral density measurements and differentiation of bone minerals from bone marrow and fat. In view of the alliance between VU medical center and the AMC this research will be centered in the recently founded MOVEMED institute.

Cardiovascular Imaging
In close cooperation with the Radiology department and several clinical departments we develop methods for cardiovascular imaging and image analysis. Focus in this research topic is on image analysis for CT-perfusion imaging, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (STW project: CARISMA) and remote image analysis for trauma (European grant: MEDUSA) .
