Theme Back to the Future: Systems, Societies, Solutions

General

Are you an early-career researcher or PhD student who’d like to practice presenting your work in an intimate setting and receive constructive feedback from world-renowned global health researchers?

Then submit an abstract to be considered for the 2025 Joep Lange Chair & Fellows masterclass facilitated by Profs. Tobias Rinke de Wit (AIGHD and PharmAccess) and Kwasi Torpey (dean of the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health). Only eight researchers will be selected per class to allow sufficient time for learning from one another and drawing inspiration from the experts.

The 3-hour masterclasses will take place online to ensure diverse participation. Previous versions attracted students from Denmark, Malawi, Italy, and South Africa, among other countries.

“The masterclass offered valuable insights through diverse presentations that introduced me to new methods,” a previous participant said. “The discussions with both mentors and fellow colleagues provided diverse perspectives on the subject matter.”

Reimagine progress

The masterclass theme is the same as that of the symposium hosted by AIGHD and JLI in the same week. For 2025, the overarching topic is called “Back to the Future: Systems, Societies, Solutions”.

With this theme, the scientific committee wishes to explore how the global health field might reclaim and reimagine progress when many hard-won gains risk being lost. Young investigators are invited to submit abstracts touching on three interconnected dimensions:

  • Systems: governance, regulation, and financing for health (think health economics or law)
  • Societies: ethics, equity, and citizen agency (studies grounded in sociology or philosophy, for instance)
  • Solutions: technologies and scientific breakthroughs (medicine, innovation, or the like)

These lenses will help participants explore: How can the world find its way back to a sustainable and just future for global health?

Small class, big ideas

Late-stage PhD students and early postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to submit abstracts of their research related to the abovementioned topic and subject areas. The scientific committee will select participants based on the quality, rigor, and innovativeness of their abstracts. They will also consider the diversity within the classes to ensure a true interdisciplinary experience.

Each class will have a maximum of 8 participants, with four people presenting. Your abstract must be shorter than 250 words and cover the following sections:

Name of author(s)
Title
Background
Methods
Results
Conclusion
Motivation

Follow this link to submit your abstract by the end of Monday, 30 September 2025: https://bit.ly/JLCFAbstracts2025.

You will be contacted by mid-October if you have been selected to attend a masterclass.
