Amsterdam UMC Cancer Center Amsterdam is going to set up a cancer research network in the North Holland/Flevoland region with regional hospitals. The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) has awarded a subsidy of 2.4 million euros for this. The aim is to offer more patients with cancer access to the latest research and innovative treatments.

Cancer Center Amsterdam aims to increase the number of patients who may benefit from innovative treatments that are being developed at Amsterdam UMC. By forming a regional research infrastructure, patients at both Amsterdam UMC and in regional hospitals can receive treatment in the context of a trial or clinical study. More patients involved in research also increases the quality and speed of research into developing new treatments.

Start pilot in September

In September, a pilot study will be started with five hospitals: Flevoziekenhuis, Dijklander Ziekenhuis, OLVG, Noordwest Ziekenhuisgroep and Spaarne Gasthuis. Research nurses will be appointed at the hospitals to coordinate the various studies locally. Patients will also be asked to donate blood or tissue for the biobanks of Cancer Center Amsterdam that support various research projects into tumor origins or the development of earlier cancer detection and personalized treatment. After this pilot program, the regional research network will be expanded to include more hospitals.

The research network is being built together with partners DORP (Dutch Oncology Research Platform), IKNL (Integral Cancer Centre of the Netherlands) along with the regional partner hospitals.
