In October 2023, Michiel Siroen was appointed by the Executive Board as the new manager of Cancer Center Amsterdam. Michiel brings a unique blend of medical expertise, innovative thinking, and a commitment to enhancing patient care, research, and education. His career path, marked by courageous professional transitions and a dedication to healthcare excellence, makes him an exceptional addition to our institute.

Michiel Siroen did not follow the usual route to a managerial position. As a boy, he dreamed about becoming a medical doctor. After successfully completing medical school, Michiel earned a PhD at the VU University Medical Center, followed by clinical rotations as a surgical resident in both Amsterdam and Haarlem to become a general surgeon

Thereafter, Michiel went to Heerlen for his training in vascular surgery and managed to obtain a position in general and vascular surgery at the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch

“I had achieved my dream and found great fulfillment and joy in providing patient care. However, back in 2013 and 2014, there was a growing surplus of surgeons with very limited good career perspectives within The Netherlands. This made me reflect on my life’s ambitions. I wanted to spend more time with my family in Amsterdam and I realized that I could also contribute in improving health care via other roles. So, I changed my career path,” says Michiel.

Making a Courageous Change

Michiel transitioned from the operating room to positions with health insurance agencies. This experience provided invaluable insights into the broader healthcare system. In addition, Michiel enhanced his qualifications by retraining as a physician in Social Medicine and completing an MBA at the University of Amsterdam.

Back to the Clinic

In 2022, Michiel saw an opportunity to return to working in a university hospital setting when a vacancy came up at the Department of Strategy & Innovation within Amsterdam UMC. “I followed my heart back to the clinic, this time not to provide patient care directly, but to improve care for patients together with a team of great people. This was really rewarding!”

I followed my heart back to the clinic, this time not to provide patient care directly, but to improve care for patients by shaping a better future.

However, Michiel still wanted to gain more experience in leadership and management. When he heard about the vacant manager position at Cancer Center Amsterdam, he did not hesitate and submitted his application. “CCA is really a great organization within Amsterdam UMC where research, education, and care come together. For several reasons, I thought this would be a great place for me to work. I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to build on CCA’s solid foundation and guide our institute towards tomorrow's achievements. I am looking forward to taking on challenges together, learning, and showing courage to create change for the better.”

Together with his wife, a neurologist at Amstelland Hospital, two children, and a dog, Michiel lives in Badhoevedorp and walks life’s path with a commitment to pursue excellence in patient care.

The Executive Board is excited to embark on a new chapter with Michiel Siroen at the helm. We are confident that his leadership will usher in an era of innovative, high-quality, and impactful care, research, and education at Cancer Center Amsterdam.
