As a nurse, how can you contribute substantially to appropriate care to patients in the last phase of life? Appropriate care follows the patient’s wishes and care needs, without causing extra suffering. To realize this, shared decision making by patients, relatives and health care professionals about continuing or stopping treatment is of utmost importance. One group of professionals in this process are nurses: they can provide relevant information due to their frequent contact with patients and relatives.
