Damiaan Denys, Professor of Psychiatry at Amsterdam UMC-UvA, won the Ig Nobel Prize last night for his work on the psychiatric disorder misophonia.

Denys and his team have described the serious nuisance people can experience from other people's sounds, such as slurping, snoring and tapping of heels, as a serious psychiatric disorder. About ten years ago, Denys didn't know exactly what to think of this disorder either, now several thousand people have been treated for it in Amsterdam UMC.

The Ig Nobel Prize is an "alternative" Nobel Prize and is awarded to ten researchers every year in the autumn, one week before the announcement of the real Nobel Prize winners. In these studies one has to laugh a little at first, but the award-winning subjects also make you think.
