To do:

Which steps are to be taken first?

  • Make sure you have earned 30 ECTS points on training
  • Ask your supervisor to check the courses, trainings and activities done, in Hora Finita
  • After approval by the supervisor, you are expected to submit a request to the PhD committee of the Research Institute via Hora Finita, to assess the completed training programme in the manner established

Necessary documents:

  • Certificates to be uploaded in Hora Finita, to prove completed courses and activities

Tips:

Contact the PhD Committee of your Research Institute (See for contact details 'Downloads' below) to approve your Portfolio

Note: In addition to the VU Doctorate Regulations the Amsterdam UMC Executive Board has specified additional requirements (by decision 7 July 2021), to harmonize the rules that apply to PhD students preparing a doctorate at either university in Amsterdam. This means that in addition to the VU Doctorate Regulations article 15, the thesis must contain a portfolio of education (guideline 30 ECTS)

Did you start your PhD trajectory on 1 September 2022, or later?

For PhD candidates who entered into employment at VU Amsterdam and started their PhD trajectory as of 1 September 2022 it is mandatory to do a plagiarism scan in the first two years of the PhD Trajectory. Did you start earlier? Then you also are allowed – and even we strongly advise you – to do a plagiarism scan once a year

More information will be added to the Doctoral School website soon!

Did you start your PhD trajectory before 1 April 2015?

PhD candidates who entered into employment at VU Amsterdam before 1 April 2015 and who were not given the opportunity to be admitted to the PhD trajectory before 1 April 2015 will not be obliged to comply with the training requirements, but will retain the entitlement to do so. The starting date of the trajectory is evidenced from the decision by the College of Deans/Rector Magnificus VU Amsterdam, as listed in Hora Finita
