Young investigator in the spotlight - short talk: Guus van Laar
Title: Extrathymic AIRE expressing cells in primary Sjögrens Syndrome

Keynote speaker: Mihalis Lionakis
Title: Novel Insights into APECED syndrome.

Michail Lionakis is a physician-scientist and Chief of the Fungal Pathogenesis Section in the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology, NIAID. He has established the largest prospectively evaluated cohort of patients in the world (~160) with APECED, an autosomal recessive monogenic disorder that features multiorgan autoimmunity and mucocutaneous candidiasis.

His research focuses on better understanding the genetic and immune defects that underlie enhanced susceptibility to mucocutaneous and invasive fungal infections as well as the cellular and molecular factors involved in (auto)immune responses.

His work has defined precise genetic, biochemical, immunologic, and cellular disease mechanisms that have led to targeted immunotherapies. Dr. Lionakis has published >180 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Science, Science Translational Medicine, Science Immunology, Nature Immunology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Journal of Experimental Medicine.
