June 29th, we hosted our annual event for early and midcareer researchers ‘Junified’. This year Junified was hosted at Hotel CASA in Amsterdam. The theme of the day was self-development, focusing on ‘Boost your Growth!’. This theme was reflected on in the keynote and workshops. Dionne Kringos, vice-director of APH moderated this inspiring afternoon.

Keynote Marcella – Personal Branding

In the keynote, Marcella introduced the attendees to the concept of personal branding. Stemming from her own experience Marcella could explain very well why personal branding is very important in your personal life and academic career. Not only your writing and academic portfolio matter, the way you present yourself is key to delivering your message and achieving your goals.

In this inspiring keynote Marcella let the attendees step out of their comfort zone by sharing experiences, stories and challenges. Using the roadmap and DIVE model, Marcella has inspired us to focus on one area of development to accelerate growth and to increase visibility with a personal goal in mind.

Panel discussion

After the inspiring keynote of Marcella we talked about self-development during the PhD trajectory with a panel. Donny Kreuger moderated the panel discussion. The members of the panel were PhD advisors Mandy Hu and Jordi Cabanas Danes, Meike Bartels (Professor of Genetics and Well-being at VU Amsterdam) and Monique van Beukering (MD PhD). Among others they discussed stress during your PhD and deciding on career options after the PhD trajectory. Highlighted were challenges they have experienced during their PhD and what they see in others during supervision and coaching. For early career researchers this was a good way to share experiences and learn that colleagues encounter the same challenges.

Effective Communication with PhD Advisors

Together with PhD Advisors Mandy Hu and Jordi Cabanas Danes from the Amsterdam UMC doctoral school, attendees worked on developing communication skills in the workshop ‘Effective communication’. Starting with the theoretical DISC model differences between behavioral and communication styles were highlighted. Furthermore attendees learned more about giving and receiving feedback and communication with peers, supervisors and stakeholders.

How to make your writing memorable? with Marjolein Versteeg

Can you deliver your message as powerful as Martin Luther King once did? How can you experience the process of writing as a fun activity? And how do you make your writing memorable? – All questions were addressed in the interactive workshop by Marjolein Versteeg.

Writing papers is one of the hardest things PhD candidates struggle with. However, it also takes a lot of time. During this workshop attendees learned how to write in a more effective way, how to make it fun and to be inspiring!

This popular workshop was led by Marjolein, expert by experience. She obtained her PhD a few years ago and now helps early career researchers developing their writing skills.

Perfectionism with Wendy van der List

Perfectionism might be seen as a positive aspect in your career. But is it really? For a lot of researchers experiencing perfectionism it is more of a burden than a benefit. Wendy inspired us to talk about our behaviour and perfectionism. Individuals not only reflected on where it comes from, but also on how it challenges you in your work and daily life. And most important: how to break free from perfectionism!

Reflection is the starting point of development. Reflecting on what the challenges are and what do you need or want to learn? Wendy helped the attendees taking these first steps.
