Amsterdam UMC invites PhD candidates, to take part in one of over 65 Green Teams, that are active across the organization
Green Teams help finding solutions to environmental sustainability questions and problems that are relevant to their department. For you as PhD candidate this is an attractive opportunity to contribute to sustainability alongside your research work.
Probably there is also one in your department. Please consider to participate in one of the Green Teams. Curious which Green Team will be interesting for you? Check for more information and Green Team options this sharepoint webpage.
Discuss with your supervisor how your efforts can contribute as training component for your PhD portfolio.
Get inspired by the PhD candidate's experiences, as described below:
Lisanne Kouwenberg was one of the founders of her department’s Green Team. After a departmental development day in 2022, there were so many interesting green ideas that the department decided they needed a dedicated team: a Green Team. POH as a department has a strong research focus, so there are many PhD candidates, of which some are also active within the Green Team. On behalf of her Green Team, she applied for the Green Fund of Amsterdam UMC with an idea to organize discussions on academic flying behavior. This idea was funded, so the project is starting soon! Behavior change is a topic that many of the researchers at POH encounter, and the Green Team is an option to apply that knowledge to change the behavior of yourself and colleagues for the improvement of the environment.
Jante Sinnige uses her research skills to help the Green Team find scientific evidence for sustainability ideas. Writing (grant) proposals and policies, or sharing knowledge she gained at symposia are other useful contributions she brings to the Team. At the same time, being part of the Green Team allows Jante the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team alongside nurses, specialists and others at the Intensive Care department. Through Green Team Projects, she has been in touch with various other departments, such as the apothecary, waste management, and infection prevention. Taking part in the Green Team allows her to work on the sustainability issues she finds important, while also developing her own skills and being able to apply available knowledge: a win-win-win situation!
Maaike Soors d’Ancona does research on circularity in hospitals. Being part of the Green Team allows her to apply knowledge she has on the sustainability transition in her own environment, providing her with more energy to see her working environment change due to the actions of the Green Team. The Green Team organised theme days for specific sustainability themes, such as the Digital Clean-Up week, developed an infographic on sustainable printing of your PhD thesis, and mapped work-related flying behaviour for their department. Recently, they were working with the Green Team at the ICT department on a pilot for automatic shutdown of pc’s at the office to save energy. Meeting with other like-minded people is a source of inspiration and a way to apply creativity to changes you wish to see in your own working environment.
