Online workshop on sex, gender, and intersectionality in health (care) research.
Amsterdam Movement Sciences
You are warmly invited to the online workshop on September 29, from 16 – 18 hrs on Sex, gender, and intersectionality in health (care) research. Please find the details below.
Trainers:
Dr. Irene van Valkengoed, department Public and Occupational Health, section Ethnicity, Gender and Health, Amsterdam Public Health research institute, Amsterdam UMC;
Dr. Petra Verdonk, department Ethics, Law & Humanities, Amsterdam Public Health research institute, Amsterdam UMC.
Background:
Sex and gender differences in epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases occur across populations and contexts. Considering such differences in research increases the validity of findings, and ultimately contributes to more tailored programs and policies. For that reason, funders, journals and the general public increasingly demand the inclusion of the sex and gender, or ‘the gender dimension’ in projects. Beyond the gender dimension, other aspects of identity such as class, ethnicity, or age, interact with and color each other. These intersections create a unique social positioning (intersectionality) based on privileges and disadvantages that play out in life including in health (Crenshaw, 1991). Intersectionality as a normative lens and as a methodological tool helps to understand how people’s structural social positioning in society affects health and health care. How can we use these lenses in health (care) research?
Programme:
In this workshop, we will discuss sex and gender bias, its negative consequences and stress the relevance of the gender dimension in research.
In a next step, we will discuss the tenets and possibilities of integrating an intersectionality perspective, share some examples of research, and discuss how the possible added value of the gender dimension and intersectionality to our own projects.
Learning goals:
After the workshop, participants have gained knowledge and insight of concepts:
gender bias, sex and gender in health and health research, intersectionality,
understand how this applies to their own research projects knowledge of practical tools, e-learnings and websites.
