As a balloon

A baby's intestines are vulnerable and we must therefore take good care of them, says Prof. Joep Derikx in his inaugural lecture. He advocates a more complete, comprehensive view of treating these organs with attention to the medical side, the team around the baby and small steps forward in research.

The intestine is one of the most vulnerable organs of a baby and at the same time very important for growth. We often don't know which baby has a vulnerable intestine and why that is the case, says Professor Derikx. 'That's why we have to take good care of these babies. We can only do that well with a team around the baby.'

That team includes parents, caregivers and researchers. It often involves small steps forward in care and research to ultimately arrive at new insights. In his inaugural lecture, Derikx discusses why the intestine is such an interesting organ and how a team can function as well as possible in search of small steps forward in care and research.
