Dr. Rik Westland and Dr. Jaap Mulder, pediatric nephrologists, are pivotal members of the ArtDECO consortium, which investigates predicting kidney problems in children with congenital kidney and urinary tract abnormalities.
Led by Dr. Westland from Amsterdam UMC, the consortium comprises researchers from six Dutch university children's centers. Their aim is to gain insights into the causes and prognosis of congenital kidney and urinary tract disorders, empowering affected children and their parents with better information about what to expect.
Dr. Westland, affiliated with the Amsterdam Reproduction and Development research institute, emphasizes the effective collaboration within the consortium and the successful establishment of an extensive data and biobank. They are currently on track to collect data from 3,750 patients, one of their primary objectives.
Starting from the second half of 2024, the consortium will integrate the collected data with genetic research. They will investigate both known and novel genetic causes, testing them in the laboratory. The main goal is to gain deep insights into the origins of congenital kidney disorders and develop new prognosis models and intervention methods.
