About us
The department of Anesthesiology is one of the largest departments residing in Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc. The department employs about 25 staff anesthesiologists, more than 40 residents in Anesthesiology and research faculty.
Scientific research plays a central role in the department. Scientific research in Anesthesiology not only enhances the academic profile of the department, but may contribute to improvement of the quality of clinical care.
Research
The department of Anesthesiology of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc distinguishes several research programs in the area of Pain, Pain Relief & Palliative Care, Acute Care, Perioperative Care and Airway Management. The research programs are supervised by Principal Investigators and Research Coordinators who are all staff member in the department. The type of scientific research varies from epidemiology, clinical trials and laboratory investigations. The department is actively looking for students and technicians who are interested in research internships within the field of Anesthesiology.
The research programs are embedded in the Research Institutes 'The Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine' ( EMGO+ ), 'The Institute for Cardiovascular Research' (ICaR-VU ) and MOVE .

Education
The departments houses more than 40 residents in Anesthesiology who follow a five year education program. During this education program, residents are trained as anesthesiologists, emergency physicians and intensive care doctors. The education program further includes a specific pain & pain relief internship. All residents are required to perform a scientific research project and provide a scientific presentation.

Patient Care
Anesthesiologists play a central role in the operating theater and contribute to the treatment of pain in patients with acute and chronic pain. Furthermore, anesthesiologists in Amsterdam UMC, location VU University Medical Center participate in intensive care medicine and stabilization of vital parameters in trauma patients.
The medical and scientific specialty Anesthesiology is engaged in the protection of patients against life threatening circumstances caused by illness or trauma or as a result of iatrogenic stress during diagnostic and/or therapeutic treatments like surgery.
Anesthesiologists are so-called integrative physiologists, who implement physiological and pharmacological knowledge to partly or completely take over the vital functions of a patient. Maintenance and protection of vital functions requires the use of non-invasive and invasive hemodynamic monitoring and ventilation devices.
