General

Each year, the AGEM research institute organizes a seminar series focused on metabolism: the Tager Lectures. These lectures are named after Professor Joseph Tager, who made important contributions to Fabry, Pompe and Gaucher disease and had a major impact on our understanding of peroxisomal diseases. He was chairman of the Biochemistry Department at the University of Amsterdam (1980-1991).

On Thursday October 3, the Tager seminar series will continue with a new lecture by Prof. dr. Kerstin Stemmer, who works at the University of Augsburg (Germany) as Professor of Molecular Cell Biology. She has also been Associate Editor of Toxicology In Vitro at Elsevier for the past eleven years.

Extracellular Vesicles: Emerging Key Players in Metabolic Diseases

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as pivotal players in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases. These nano-sized particles, released by various cell types, carry a bioactive cargo of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, reflecting their cell of origin. They play a powerful role of EVs in intercellular communication, particularly in the modulation of metabolic processes, such as insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism and inflammation.

This lecture will discuss critical experimental considerations for isolating functional EVs from tissues and bodily fluids to study their roles in metabolism. It will highlight the mechanistic role of adipocyte-derived EVs in insulin sensitivity and secretion while exploring their potential as biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis of metabolic diseases.
