Each year, the AGEM research institute organizes a seminar series focused on metabolism: the Tager Lectures. These lectures are named after Professor Joseph Tager, who made important contributions to Fabry, Pompe and Gaucher disease and had a major impact on our understanding of peroxisomal diseases. He was chairman of the Biochemistry Department at the University of Amsterdam (1980-1991).

On Thursday May 23, the Tager seminar series will continue with a new lecture by dr. Tony Lam, Professor, Depts of Physiology & Medicine, Toronto General Hospital Research Institute & University of Toronto. He is also Canada Research Chair in Diabetes & Obesity and Associate Director at Banting and Best Diabetes Centre, University of Toronto.

Lecture

A kidney-brain axis regulates food intake and body weight

Obesity is strongly associated with the development of diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, but there is evidence for a bidirectional relationship wherein the kidney also acts as a key regulator of body weight. In this lecture, I will outline how the kidney might modulate feeding and body weight through a GDF15-dependent kidney-brain axis. The Lam laboratory proposes that kidney function and body weight are related in a bidirectional fashion, and that this interrelationship affects human health and disease.
