Amsterdam UMC has strong scientific ambitions; a key objective is to conduct excellent scientific research to contribute to the improvement of healthcare. This requires accurate measurement and analysis of patient data.

About us

The Department of Epidemiology and Data Science (EDS) has the epidemiological, data analytic and health economic expertise to train and assist (future) physicians and researchers of Amsterdam UMC in solving empirical problems.

Researchers in the EDS department collaborate with researchers from all research institutes of Amsterdam UMC. Interaction is explicitly sought in order to take Amsterdam UMC research to a higher level. In addition, the department initiates its own research in epidemiology, methodology, biostatistics, machine learning and bioinformatics.

The department is also very active in teaching. The department coordinates a number of courses in the bachelor, master and PhD programs of the Medical Faculty at the VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and offers two master programs in epidemiology.

The department also provides methodological and statistical consultation to researchers in the design, analysis and reporting of their research through EDS-Consult. This consultation consists primarily of one on one consultation, but the department also develops methodological tools and host the wiki biostatistics.

Research

The research of the EDS department is organized into 7 research sections:

  • Aging and Longitudinal Modeling (ALM)
  • Big Statistics (BigStats)
  • Bioinformatics and Biomedical Computing (BioMec)
  • Clinical Epidemiology (ClinEpi)
  • Developmental and Reproductive Epidemiology (DARE)
  • Disease Modeling and Healthcare evualuation (DMHE)
  • Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Epidemiology (LCDE)

Education

The department of EDS aims to offer a coherent educational program in epidemiology and data science for the bachelor and master programs within the Medical Faculty of the VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) as well as within the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School. The department of EDS also offers two master programs:

  • Epidemiology (VU EpidM)
  • Evidence Based Practice in Health Care (UvA EBPiHC)

Support

The department of EDS offers methodological and statistical consultation to researchers in the design, analysis and reporting of their scientific research through EDS-Consult, taking into account relevant (inter)national guidelines. In this way, the department promotes the quality of current and future (medical) scientific research at the Amsterdam UMC. The consultation is mainly offered through one on one consultations; the researchers then proceed with the advice themselves. The department also develops tools (such as manuals, templates, checklists, model syntaxes) for common topics and hosts the wiki biostatistics so that researchers, if possible, can get started themselves.
