To do:

The dean may grant the ius promovendi to another university employee, under the following conditions:

  • Only researchers with (1) an appointment as associate professor, (2) an appointment as PI and (3) at least two completed trajectories as co-supervisor can submit a request
  • A motivated request, supported by the head of the department, addressed to the dean, by sending a letter (by email) to the Office of Doctorate Affairs, must consist of a list of PhD candidates to be supervised, proof of compliance with the aforementioned three criteria, and a CV
  • An associate professor with ius promovendi may only act as supervisor if (s)he has obtained a grant for this PhD candidate. If this is not the case, a second supervisor must be appointed

Note: Please be aware that the ius promovendi should be applied for in an early stage of the PhD trajectory

Necessary documents:

See also Appointment of (co-)Supervisors - Doctorate Committee

To be eligible for the ius promovendi, you need to submit a request to the dean, through the Office of Doctorate Affairs. The substantiated request must contain:

  • An explanation why you would like to act as supervisor
  • An explanation of the research, in particular the funding
  • Names and estimated dates of the days of the defence of all concerned PhD candidates to be supervised

Add the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A list of PhD trajectories for which you have acted as co-supervisor (at least two)
  • Letter of appointment as Amsterdam UMC Principle Investigator (PI)
  • The executive Board's decision to appoint you as associate professor (UHD)

Points of attention:

  • The associate professor with the ius promovendi may only act as the first supervisor if (s)he has obtained funding for the concerned PhD candidate. If this is not the case, a second supervisor must be appointed
  • The application must be supported by the head of department

After having received the request, including all necessary documents (as attachments in one e-mail), the dean usually decides at the first opportunity whether the ius promovendi will be granted

Tips:

Note: This admission as supervisor only counts for the applicable PhD trajectory/trajectories. Next time a new request has to be submitted. If an associate professor has been granted the ius promovendi, it is recommended to join the Superb Supervision Course

Note: The associate professor with ius promovendi, is only allowed wearing a toga during the ceremony of the PhD candidate(s) concerned
