Addressing the effect of a variety of interventions to promote Shared Decision Making in consultations about treatment for advanced cancer.

Palliative systematic treatment offers uncertain and often limited benefits whilst the burden can be high. Hence, treatment decisions require Shared Decision Making (SDM). In two studies, CHOICE and SYMPHONY, we address the effect of a variety of interventions to promote SDM in consultations about treatment for advanced cancer.

Based on qualitative work, we developed interventions for oncologists, nurses, general practitioners and patients. The main overall outcome is SDM in either simulated or real consultations. First results show that skills training for oncologists improves both observed and patient-reported SDM.
