Connie Bezzina is the main applicant of one of the five awarded NWO Research Infrastructure projects. The project focuses on creating the first national registry for patients with Heritable Cardiac Conditions. With this program, NWO invests in innovative scientific infrastructures, which will be used to develop high-quality equipment, data collections and software.

First national registry

CardioResource will be the first national registry for patients with Heritable Cardiac Conditions such as the cardiomyopathies and cardiac electrical disorders. By bringing together the resources of all seven largest Dutch University Medical Centers, it will enable breakthrough research into these diseases by combining cutting edge (AI-based) analysis in genetics, imaging and the integration of clinical data. This will lead to more accurate diagnosis and improved understanding of the risk of developing disease and severe cardiac complications for patients and their families. It will also facilitate the development of novel therapies for more effective and targeted treatment of these life-threatening conditions.

The Research Infrastructure Program

NWO received 35 proposals for the RI programme. The proposals were assessed by an independent advisory committee of scientists from different disciplines. The committee assessed the proposals based on various criteria, such as scientific quality and societal impact, and visited several consortia to receive clarification on the application. Five of the 35 projects received grants. The NWO contribution awarded ranged from about €2.9 million to over €4.8 million. Read more about the program and the other awarded projects here.
