A new study by Sander Oorschot, Eric Voorn et al, of the department of rehabilitation medicine at AUMC, and published in Neurology on June 4, '25, titled Efficacy of Combined Aerobic Exercise and Coaching on Physical Fitness in People With Neuromuscular Diseases (https://doi.org/10.1212/WNL.0000000000213781) shows that a personalized, home-based aerobic exercise and coaching program significantly improves physical fitness in people with neuromuscular diseases like muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
The research showed that over 18 months, participants who followed the program had a 10% increase in fitness compared to those receiving usual care. The program was safe, with similar rates of adverse events in both groups. The researchers from the department of Rehabilitation Mediicine, Amsterdam UMC suggest future studies explore how improved fitness affects daily functioning and how to maintain long-term exercise habits. The project was financed by Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds.
