We are pleased to announce the upcoming PhD defense of Chermaine Kwant, whose dissertation sheds new light on the critical but often neglected role of nutrition in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Her research not only advances scientific understanding but also draws on her unique perspective as both a researcher and a former patient.

A New Perspective on PAH Care

PAH is a rare and progressive disease that leads to right heart failure and a significant reduction in quality of life. While pharmacological treatments have improved, they remain primarily focused on symptom management. Kwant’s work highlights nutrition as a modifiable factor that could play a key role in improving patient outcomes.

Key Findings: Nutritional Deficiencies and the Need for Tailored Guidelines

The dissertation reveals that malnutrition and deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin D, iron, and vitamin B12 are widespread among PAH patients. Current dietary recommendations often mirror those for heart failure, which may not be appropriate for PAH. Her research calls for the development of disease-specific nutritional guidelines to better address the unique needs of this patient group.

Innovative Interventions: Digital Nutrition Education

A highlight of the thesis is the introduction of a video-based e-learning program designed to improve dietary habits and quality of life in PAH patients. Participants in the pilot program showed sustained improvements in their eating patterns and reported signals of enhanced well-being, demonstrating the potential of personalized digital education.

Beyond Numbers: The Value of Meaningful Activities

Kwant’s research also explored the use of wearable devices to monitor daily physical activity. Interestingly, she found that patients’ perceived engagement in meaningful activities, such as gardening or household chores, correlated more strongly with quality of life than objective step counts, emphasizing the importance of subjective well-being in lifestyle research.

From Patient to Researcher: A Personal Mission

Having experienced PAH herself and undergone a double lung transplant, Kwant brings a deeply personal commitment to her work. Her journey from patient to scientist has inspired her to advocate for a holistic, patient-centered approach to PAH care, including routine nutritional assessments, tailored dietary advice, and the creation of a dedicated PAH Lifestyle Clinic.
