This March, AI&I researchers will take on the Amstelveen Spring Marathon to raise funds for crucial research into Post-Acute Infection Syndromes (PAIS). Every donation supports innovative projects to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for PAIS patients. Support PAIS research, donate today!

Meet the Runner: Valentijn

Hi! I am Valentijn, a first-year PhD student at the Department of Experimental Immunology and the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology. I have signed up for the full marathon, and for me, training is not something I have to fit around my PhD, it actually helps me progress in my research. I keep things simple and consistent: I wake up early and start my day with a workout. This routine leaves me energized, focused, and ready to tackle the day, especially on Monday mornings. My workouts are often when new ideas emerge and problems suddenly make sense. I can honestly recommend it to everyone!

Why I Run

This event gives me a unique opportunity to combine two things I am passionate about: science and running. By participating in this marathon, I can physically challenge myself while also raising money and awareness for research that matters to millions of people worldwide.

Personal Motivation

I feel grateful to be able to do a PhD, have an active social life, and live a healthy, sporty life where I can keep challenging myself in multiple ways. Training for a marathon is tough, but it is something my body allows me to do, and I do not take that for granted. For many people living with Post-Acute Infection Syndromes, having the freedom to shape their daily lives the way they want isn’t always possible. Realizing that health and energy aren’t guaranteed is a big motivation for me to run.

The Importance of PAIS Research

Many people are affected by long-term symptoms after infections, but we still know far too little about what causes them. More research is essential to better understand PAIS and improve diagnosis and treatment.

Goals for the Fundraising Campaign

I want to raise more awareness, because for many people, the impact of COVID and other infections is still very much part of daily life.

Marathon Preparation

In October, I ran my first marathon. Since then, I’ve been following a training schedule to stay in shape until March, combining my runs with swimming and gym sessions.
