Focus of research

Gerard Boink (1981) is a translational cardiologist (Amsterdam UMC Heart Center), group leader (Departments of Cardiology and Medical Biology), and Chief Valorization Officer (Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences). He received his Master of Pharmaceutical Science (2006) from the University of Utrecht (including its Honors Program), and his Master of Medical Science (2006) and Medical Doctor (2013) degree (cum laude), from the University of Amsterdam. For his doctorate training he spent three years in the laboratory of Experimental Cardiology (Amsterdam UMC), and two years at the Department of Pharmacology (Columbia University), and subsequently received his PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam (2013; cum laude). He has more than 20 years of experience in translational cardiology, gene therapy development, and stem cell technologies, which supported the foundation of Amsterdam UMC spin-off company PacingCure B.V., where he currently fulfills the role of Chief Executive Officer. He completed his clinical cardiology training in 2020 and his fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology (device cardiology) in 2022. Currently, his clinical work is focused on the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. In addition, his out-patient clinic is further focused on heart patients with neuromuscular disorders. His research is focused on translational development of gene therapies for cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. He is a member of the Amsterdam UMC Valorization Board (AVB) and Committee of Talents and Appointments (CTA), and he is Amsterdam UMC representative for the National Science Agenda on Regenerative Medicine. He also serves as associate editor for the Journal of Translational Cardiovascular Research.
