Specialization

Derk Jan Jager is a dentist specialized in maxillofacial prosthetics (MFP) and works as an assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Amsterdam UMC. He focuses primarily on patients with complex conditions, such as Sjögren's syndrome. He also runs the ‘Saliva Consultation Hour,’ where patients with a variety of saliva-related complaints are seen. Among other things, he conducts research into oral rehabilitation for patients with Sjögren's syndrome and head/neck cancer and into new therapies for dry mouth. He obtained his dental degree (2005) and PhD from the University of Groningen and completed his training in prosthetic-restorative dentistry at the UMC Groningen, resulting in membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (supervision: prof. dr. Marco Cune). Furthermore, he earned his Board Certification in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics by the Dutch Society of Gnathology and Prosthodontics in 2016. Until 2023 he was board member of the Salivary Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Until december 2022 he was board member of the Dutch Society for Gnathology and Prosthodontics (NVGPT). He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters and has held positions in national and international dental and scientific associations. He is currently pursuing an MSc in Clinical Trials at the University of Oxford.
