The Dutch Brain Foundation (‘Hersenstichting’) will finance national research into brain damage caused by the corona virus. The costs for the research, over 325,000 Euros, have been raised through a crowdfunding foundation.

In the NeNeSCo research (Neurological & Neuropsychological Sequelae or COVID-19 Infection) patients from the first corona virus wave will be followed for a longer period of time and examined for possible brain damage. Cognitive tests are taken and a MRI-scan of the brain is made.

Janneke Horn (medical specialist at Amsterdam UMC) and Caroline van Heugten (professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at Maastricht University), will lead the research. COVID-19 patients from the hospitals Maastricht UMC, Zuyderland, Amsterdam UMC, OLVG, UMC Utrecht, Diaconessenhuis are included in the study.

Together with Janneke Horn, co-applicant and APH researcher Esmée Verwijk (assistant professor at Amsterdam UMC) will coordinate the project for the Amsterdam region. The results of the research will be used to provide the right treatments for future COVID-19 patients.
