How do you best support relatives of intensive care unit (ICU) patients during a crisis? The past two years Amsterdam UMC researchers (department of Public and Occupational Health) have evaluated the support in the ICU during the first COVID-19 wave. They have examined what can be learned from this for future crisis situations as well as for ‘normal’ situations.

In collaboration with healthcare professionals, relatives and other experts, a practical guide for healthcare professionals was developed. The guide offers healthcare providers tools for supporting relatives of ICU patients in times of crisis, but also beyond. In addition, six short clips are available in which an ICU nurse, an ICU physician, a support team member, a spiritual caregiver, a patient and a researcher talk about their experiences with supporting loved ones during the first COVID-19 wave and which recommendations from the guidethey consider important.
