About 55 to 75% of patients receiving chemotherapy experience changes in how food tastes which can make eating an extra struggle. Sufficient nutritional intake - especially protein - is important not only to endure treatment but to support the best possible outcome and quality of life. Various experts within Amsterdam UMC, such as cooks and dieticians, help patients with cancer to manage changes in taste.

On World Cancer Day February 4th , all patients at both locations of Amsterdam UMC will be served a special soup high in protein. Patients with cancer will receive additional flavor packets and an instructions how they can be used to adjust the taste of the soup to make it more appealing. By adding flavors such as sweet syrup, lemon, garlic or chili-oil the taste of the soup can be altered to compensate for changes in taste. Health scientist and dietician-specialist oncology Kelly Silverio Alonso - Duin will take over the Instagram account of Amsterdam UMC on februari 4th and demonstrate how we are helping patients to manage taste.
