Hans Tol has been appointed the new director of AMS by the board of directors, professor dr. Saskia Peerdeman (Amsterdam AMC) and professor dr. Maurits van Tulder (Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Scineces, VU Amsterdam). Hans Tol has been appointed per April 1, 2024 for a period of 4 years, and will take over the baton from professor Mario Maas. We are delighted that professor dr. Hans Tol will join the management team of AMS as the new director next to professor dr. Richard Jaspers, and hope for a fruitful and constructive period.

Professor Dr. Hans Tol (MD PhD, sports medicine physician) is a sports medicine physician at Amsterdam UMC and A.F.C. Ajax. He leads the sports injury prevention and (regenerative) treatment research at Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the AUMC.

Hans is chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the FIFA, chairman of the Research Board of the Dutch Society of Sports Medicine and visiting professional at the IOC Research Centre in Qatar. Through his international network he supervise(s)(d) PhDs in The Netherlands, Qatar, Norway and Denmark. Current consortium leadership includes the NWO granted (850 K) “The State of the Cartilage (START) project” (NWO and the Dutch Arthritis Society invest in innovation for the early detection of osteoarthritis | NWO). He has authored over 160 peer-reviewed papers, including senior authorships in the NEJM and JAMA.

Somewhere in a previous century, Hans played six years for De Graafschap and became Dutch champion with the “Gelders KNVB selectieteam”. Currently he is involved in a typical Dutch old man’s sport (recreational cycling).
