Lipotoxicity and type 2 diabetes in South Asians.

Focus of research
I am an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology & Data Science at Amsterdam UMC and a registered epidemiologist. I serve as the department’s education coordinator to shape the next generation of medical and data science professionals.
 
My current research focuses on reducing the global burden of cardiometabolic diseases, specifically type 2 diabetes, and tackling persistent health inequalities. As a researcher embedded in both Amsterdam UMC and the Julius Center (UMC Utrecht), my work bridges epidemiology, environmental health, and social justice. I heavily utilize quantitative epidemiological methods, high-dimensional metabolomics, and large-scale cohort data to uncover the biological and environmental pathways driving disease.
 
Currently, my research agenda centers on two major pillars:
  • Ecosyndemics & Environmental Impact: At the Julius Center, I work on ecosyndemics projects, including the ECOTIP project, investigating how climate change, environmental degradation, and social factors interact to aggravate health disparities.
  • Health Equity & Diabetes Complications: Supported by a Postdoc Fellowship from Amsterdam Public Health, I investigate ethnic differences in diabetes complications, analyzing how the social and physical environment shapes long-term health outcomes.
This work builds upon a solid foundation in Biomedical Sciences. My previous research includes a PhD within the European EuroDHYAN project using HELIUS data to study diabetes risks in South Asian populations, an international research stay at the University of Glasgow analyzing UK Biobank data, and the co-coordination of the Hoorn Studies during my postdoc at Amsterdam UMC.
