Focus of research

With a background in Medical Informatics and Health Sciences, my research focuses on reusing routinely collected healthcare data to improve quality of care with a particular focus on intensive care. A central principle in my work is “register once, reuse many times”: making data collected in routine care available for multiple purposes while ensuring appropriate governance, privacy and data quality. Alongside my research, I contribute to education and the training and supervision of the next generation of medical informatics researchers.

 Quality of intensive care

Research on the quality and outcomes of intensive care, including ICU performance and efficiency, practice variation, patient in-hosptial outcomes and long-term outcomes after ICU admission. This research is conducted in close international collaboration, including within the framework of Linking of Global Intensive Care (LGIC), a global initiative to connect ICU data and researchers worldwide.

 Quality registries, data governance and responsible data reuse

Research on quality registries as a tool for quality improvement, data availability, governance, privacy,  legal and organisational conditions required for the responsible and secure reuse of healthcare data for quality improvement and research. Active involvement in Dutch Collaborating Registries (SKR) and the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) Working Group on European Medical Patient Registries (EMPARE).

 Interoperability and standardisation of healthcare data

Research on FAIR data, common data models such as OMOP CDM, terminology standards and the interoperability and reuse of clinical data for research, benchmarking and quality improvement, including developments related to the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

 Intensive care data for pandemic preparedness and surveillance

Data-driven analysis of respiratory infections in intensive care, including collaboration with the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), and the development of national ICU surveillance using routinely collected registry and EHR data.

 Patient-centred evaluation of intensive care

Research on patient(-reported) outcomes after intensive care, integrating patient perspectives, long term outcomes from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) with routinely collected clinical and registry data to evaluate whether care is not only effective and efficient, but also appropriate and meaningful to patients.
