Focus of research
Marieke Bak works as assistant professor at the department of Ethics, Law and Humanities. She is a bioethicist specialising in the ethics and governance of data-driven healthcare and artificial intelligence. Her research combines empirical ethics, normative analysis and stakeholder collaboration, with the aim of embedding ethical reflection into the development and implementation of health technologies.
She obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2021, with a thesis about the ethics of big data within the European cardiac arrest research consortium ESCAPE-NET, and was a visiting scholar at the Oxford Internet Institute. Currently, she leads ELSI work packages in several interdisciplinary national and European reseach projects, supervises PhD candidates, and teaches medical ethics.
For the Amsterdam Public Health Institute she is programme co-leader of its Personalized Medicine programme. At the department of ERH, she coordinates an interdisciplinary working group on ‘Technology and Good Care’ and leads the Ethics section's research line on technology. She also contributes to research governance as a member of Amsterdam UMC’s medical research ethics and biobank committees, and is a former board member of the Dutch Society of Bioethics.
Internationally, she has a secondary affiliation with the Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine at the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
