As of September 2026, APH researcher Marieke Bak is appointed program leader of Personalized Medicine (PM) at Amsterdam Public Health (APH). She succeeds Baudewijntje Kreukels and will co-lead the program together with Tessel Rigter.

Marieke Bak works as Assistant Professor in medical ethics at Amsterdam UMC and is an affiliated scholar at the Technical University of Munich. Her research focuses on the ethical aspects of medical innovation and emerging technologies in healthcare, particularly artificial intelligence and the use of health data. She aims to better understand how these developments can contribute to good, equitable and person-centered care, and to embed ethical reflection from the start of innovation projects.

Through her involvement in interdisciplinary research projects, Bak has gained experience in bringing together different perspectives on the responsible use of data and technology in healthcare. These collaborations have strengthened her interest in connecting scientific developments with the needs and values of individuals and society.

As program leader, together with Tessel Rigter, Bak aims to further strengthen collaboration within Personalized Medicine and across APH. She seeks to connect researchers from different disciplines and encourage approaches that integrate (bio-)technological, clinical, ethical and societal perspectives. In doing so, she hopes to contribute to personalized medicine that is not only scientifically innovative, but also meaningful and accessible to diverse populations.

Personalized medicine is about more than tailoring healthcare to individual characteristics. It is about considering the whole person, including their values, needs and circumstances. By bringing together different disciplines and perspectives, we can work towards care that truly reflects what matters to people
