Focus of research

With a background in biomedical engineering, I focus on the development of exhaled markers in the field of pulmonary medicine in both adults and paediatrics, combined with exciting biomarker discovery projects in fields of endocrinology and dermatology. The goal with these markers is to improve (early) diagnosis, to monitor diseases and to predict therapy response.

My work involves method development for sample collection as well as wet- and dry-lab analysis, which I do for single centre studies and large (inter)national clinical multicentre trials. The wet-lab part is most of the time based on chemical sensor or mass spectrometry driven technologies.

The developed technology can be applied at the outpatient clinic, ward or intensive care unit setting. Based on two projects that I initiated recently, ONELAB (www.onelab-project.eu) and PHEASANT, analysis of exhaled markers can soon be performed within rapid response mobile laboratories and at a patients' home too.
