113 conducted research into 414 recent suicides in the Netherlands during the period 2020–2024. This extensive study, carried out using a psychosocial autopsy approach, provides valuable insights into the lives and circumstances of people who died by suicide. Through comprehensive questionnaires and in-depth interviews, the psychosocial autopsy aims to learn from the experiences of bereaved relatives to improve suicide prevention efforts in the Netherlands.
The study examined 414 suicides, including 172 individuals under 30, 76 in their thirties, and 166 middle-aged individuals. In addition, 90 in-depth interviews were conducted with relatives: 28 of people under 30, 14 in their thirties, and 36 aged 40–70. These conversations offer important insights into the underlying factors and circumstances leading up to suicide.
