Sustainable research cycle
Implementing sustainability in research means more than setting ambitious goals. It means taking a critical look at current research processes and questioning whether there is a more sustainable choice you can make.
We distinguish three ways in which research can support environmental sustainability:
- : all researchers can make more sustainable choices in setup, execution, and methodologies.
- : researchers can include environmental outcomes in their research.
- : researchers can focus on reducing environmental impacts of healthcare and research, adapting to changing health needs because of climate change, or other planetary health topics.
To enable researchers to make more sustainable choices, we created the Sustainable Research Cycle. This tool operationalizes sustainability in research by suggesting tips in all different phases of scientific research.
A scientific publication providing background information on the Sustainable Research Cycle is being worked on. After publishing, the link will be provided here.
The sustainable research cycle
The Sustainable Research Cycle was created by Tobias Bartman, Wouter Hehenkamp, Dionne Kringos Pereira-Martins, Mitra Nekouei Shahraki, and Niek Sperna Weiland and published with the position paper on Sustainability in Research.
