The Amsterdam Center for Health Communication (ACHC) is organizing its Spring Symposium on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. This time, the theme is "Effective Communication for Pandemic Preparedness", and the symposium will be led by Bas van den Putte and Adriana Solovei.

In this symposium, we will reflect on the challenges and lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, and discuss steps to improve pandemic preparedness, with attention to various dimensions of health communication.
First, Jeannette de Boer and Femke Overbosch from the Pandemic & Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC) will guide us through the communication challenges that arise during different phases of a pandemic. Aurélie de Waele from Ghent University will speak about her research on communication from different sources during a health crises. Adriana Solovei (University of Amsterdam) will address media usage during the pandemic and the role of interpersonal communication. Maarten Keulemans from de Volkskrant will explore the role of journalism during the pandemic. Rita Timmerman from the Ministry of General Affairs, who was part of the National Core Team for Crisis Communication during the COVID-19 pandemic, will explain how communication was shaped at the time and the role behavioral science played in it. Finally, Bas van den Putte will give an overview of several studies on communication during a pandemic and conclude with a vision on how science and government can be better prepared next time.
