Smart, fair and ethical use of data and digital tools to improve both personal and societal health and wellbeing is key to futureproof healthcare and to establishing a learning healthcare system.

Professional and public awareness is growing, as is the need for solid evidence on the proposed benefits of ‘Digital Health’. Indeed, ‘Digital Health’  has become a key part of the Amsterdam UMC strategy. The movement towards a more personal health care provision facilitated by digitalization is supported by the implementation program’ Samen Digitaal’ of the Amsterdam UMC. Use of Digital Health strategies may, if well implemented and researched, support the patient and their relatives. But also, may help the healthcare professionals to provide better and more efficient care.

Within APH, many research programs already embrace aspects of digital health, but a good scientific line to embed research activities that are often cross-sectional was still lacking. This is why APH is setting-up a new overarching research program ‘Digital Health’.

The goal of the APH program ‘Digital Health’ is to bring together APH research and research from other research programs focused on the broader digital developments in health care. This, to examine and safeguard initiatives, in order to propel such initiatives and the people fostering them both nationally and internationally. The goal is to bring together research themes in the area of  e-health, (FAIR) data science, AI, virtual- and augmented reality, simulation and applied mobile health, This will position APH as a leader helping to sustain a more digitalized healthcare system, raise awareness and build a strong community for further research developments.

Initiators are Marlies Schijven, full professor and PI with focus on the area of simulation, serious gaming and applied mobile healthcare, and Ronald Cornet, associate professor and PI at the department of Medical Informatics, focusing on reusable health data. They are highly motivated to launch the new APH program on June 2nd to connect researchers and contribute to cutting-edge digital health research within APH. This, together with a strong group of fellow PI’s working on the theme.
