We are pleased to announce that two early-career researchers affiliated with Amsterdam UMC have each been awarded an APH Global Health Personal Grant of €3,000 for 2026 to strengthen their scientific training and international collaboration.

Dr. Dinis B. Nguenha, a PhD candidate linked to the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and the Centro de Investigação em Saúde da Manhiça (CISM) in Mozambique, will spend four weeks in Amsterdam. His visit will focus on advanced multilevel regression modelling within the PreFIT cohort, integrating environmental ultraviolet (UV) radiation data with longitudinal vitamin D measurements to better understand how environmental context influences tuberculosis risk in high-burden settings. The stay will culminate in a submission-ready manuscript and further deepen the long-standing collaboration between AIGHD and CISM.

Miss Anabel Acheampong, a first-year PhD candidate in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, will visit the Laboratory for Experimental Parasitology at Amsterdam UMC for two months. Her project addresses the persistence of urogenital schistosomiasis in hard-to-reach communities in Ghana despite years of mass drug administration. During her visit, she will complete first-year PhD coursework, receive hands-on training in advanced molecular diagnostics (including PCR and sequencing), and develop protocols and draft manuscripts that will directly support her doctoral work and capacity building in her home institution.

Both €3,000 grants will not only accelerate the fellows’ PhD trajectories but also contribute to APH-GH’s mission of reducing health inequalities through high-quality research, methodological capacity strengthening, and sustained international partnerships.
