The quality of life of patients with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD and lung cancer can and must improve. The Dutch consortium Precision medicine for more oxygen (P4O2) will conduct research into fundamental improvements in the prevention and treatment of lung diseases.
In healthy persons of 40-50 years old, a portion of whom has developed a SARS-CoV-2 infection, is treated by means of innovative environmental measurements, determination of biomarkers in biological samples and CT scans searched for signals for early lung damage. A nutrition and lifestyle intervention is also offered and new cell models are being set up to study lung diseases in the laboratory. In this way, chronic lung diseases can be diagnosed earlier in the future and more serious damage can be prevented. This research is in line with the government's mission-driven top sectors and innovation policy. P4O2 is led by Prof. Dr. Anke-Hilse Maitland - van der Zee from Amsterdam UMC.
