Students with physical or mental health conditions are often underestimated and worry about their future in science. In my teaching about the healthy and diseased body, I show that things can be different.

That’s why I invite inspiring scientists with physical or mental health conditions to contribute to my courses on human physiology within various (bio)medical programs at VU and UvA. In a short session, they share both the physiological aspects of their condition and their personal and professional stories – with our future generation of scientists.

These encounters make education more personal, more relatable, and more relevant. Students are touched, motivated, and empowered. And especially students who live with a condition themselves feel truly seen.

My students are enthusiastic – and I want to offer this experience to many more students, both with and without health conditions. To do that, I am looking to expand the program and am currently seeking more role models.
