The Central Tenure Track scheme (TT) is in place for very talented researchers that Amsterdam UMC wants to support to attain a permanent position at the department, based on the shared expectation that they have the ambition and capacity to advance to Associate Professor (UHD) at the end of the Tenure Track.
Laureates of the Amsterdam UMC Fellowship will enrol into the Tenure Track and it is also open for nomination of researchers by their department head who have successfully obtained a prestigious personal grant. Tenure Trackers need to have an appointment with Amsterdam UMC or the Research BV.
As the aim of the Tenure Track is to ultimately embed the researcher into the formation of the department as UHD, the nomination of a candidate should be supported by agreements and a written statement of the head of the department and the Division. The Tenure Track committee will periodically monitor the progress and development of the researcher. Towards the end phase of the Tenure Track trajectory, the candidate will prepare a Qualification Portfolio (QP) for nomination by the department head to the Dean for promotion to UHD. Conform the appointment procedures of Amsterdam UMC, the Dean will seek advice from the Committee Talent and Appointments who will evaluate the QP, after which the Dean will decide upon appointment.
Enrolment into the Central Tenure Track
Prerequisites:
- Sufficient funds to provide for the researcher’s salary and research project during the Tenure Track
- A support letter from the Department head and Division with clear agreements on the Tenure Track (planning, financing) and statement regarding the fit of the candidate with the strategic aims of the department concerning the future embedding as Associate Professor (UHD)
- Alignment of the research topic with the Research institute(s) of Amsterdam UMC the researcher is affiliated with as well as the research strategy of Amsterdam UMC.
Two types of researchers can enrol:
- Laureates of the Amsterdam UMC Fellowship are enrolled after having obtained the grant on the basis of their successful selection interview with the Fellowship committee. The committee will then proceed as Tenure Track committee. The TT coordinator will provide information at the start on how to optimally make use of the TT trajectory, such as finding a mentor, participating in trainings and engage in other activities aimed at advancing their professional development. After one year, a progress meeting will be planned with the coordinator. Halfway the trajectory and toward the end, formal evaluations will take place with the Tenure Track committee (see below) to inform the Board of Directors about the progress of the Fellowship research project and professional development of the researcher.
- Very talented researchers who are very motivated to pursue an academic career as researcher and have obtained a prestigious personal grant can also be nominated for enrolment into the Central Tenure Track.
- The researcher is nominated by the department head with support of the Division via RS-TenureTrack@amsterdamumc.nl, accompanied by a support letter (see ‘Requirements’).
- The researcher should have sufficient budget in the form of a prestigious personal grant to provide for their own salary and to execute the research project.
- The chair and coordinator of the Tenure Track Committee will have an enrolment meeting with the researcher on the research plans and CV (to be filled out in a Tenure Track Form that is obtained from the TT coordinator) and the document(s) of the department head. The chair will decide on admittance to the TT. The Board of Directors will become involved in the end phase, when the candidate is nominated for promotion to UHD to the Dean.
Progress evaluations
Progress evaluations during the Tenure Track period
During the TT trajectory, several evaluation moments will take place for both types of researchers in the same way. The researcher will prepare a short presentation and will be asked to submit a Tenure Track Evaluation Form beforehand (to be obtained via the coordinator).
Annual progress meeting with the Tenure Track coordinator
Every year, the coordinator will plan a progress meeting and will report on the progress and development of the researcher to the chair of the Tenure Track committee.
Midterm and Endterm evaluations with the Tenure Track committee
Two formal evaluation meetings will be held with the Tenure Track committee (chair, several members and the coordinator), halfway and in the end phase. The department head will be approached for a support letter.
The is planned about 2,5 years after the start of the Tenure Track and will focus on the development and ambitions of the researcher and the progress of the research project. Advice will be provided to the researcher and department head on the development towards Associate Professor.
For Fellowship laureates, the committee will also provide advice to the Board of Directors on continuation of the Tenure Track trajectory for the remaining part of the Fellowship appointment. In case no positive advice can be given, a period can be agreed upon after which a new midterm evaluation will be planned (e.g. 1 year). In case of a negative advice, the appointment of the Fellowship laureate will not be continued after three years and the remaining Fellowship funds will fall back to the Board of Directors.
- The will take place in the last year of the Tenure Track. Based on this interview, the committee will provide advice to the Board of Directors about completion of the Tenure Track and career development of the researcher towards Associate Professor. The researcher and department head will receive a letter with a copy to the HR advisor and financial advisor of the department.
Assessment criteria
The evaluation of the progress of the research project and professional development of the researcher by the committee will be based on the
. In addition to regular research activities (publishing, fundraising, supervision of PhD candidates, lecturing, etc.) also membership of scientific or advisory committees, scientific organisations, (inter)national cooperation, mentorship, societal impact activities, BKO-certification, PhD supervision training, leadership courses, etc. are considered important.
Nomination for appointment as PI and UHD
If applicable, the researcher can be nominated for Principal Investigator of Amsterdam UMC by the department head during the Tenure Track. The nomination will be evaluated by the Amsterdam Research Board who provides advice to the Board of Directors on appointment as PI.
In the final year of the Tenure Track, the researchers will prepare a Qualification Portfolio (QP) for nomination to become UHD by the department head to the Dean. The QP and accompanying support letters will be evaluated on request of the Dean by the Committee Talent and Appointments on the basis of the criteria of Amsterdam UMC for Associate Professor, within the framework of the UvA and VU appointment policies.
