Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (Charcot foot) is a severe complication of diabetes that may lead to fractures, joint destruction, deformity, ulceration and amputation. Despite the significant clinical burden associated with Charcot foot, important questions remain regarding biomechanics, disease progression and long-term outcomes.
This PhD project investigates several aspects of Charcot foot, including the relationship between plantar pressures and radiographic deformity, long term clinical outcomes, offloading approaches and imaging and biological characteristics of disease.
The project combines biomechanical, imaging and epidemiological studies to improve understanding of structural changes and outcomes in people with Charcot foot. The research includes studies evaluating plantar pressure patterns and midfoot deformity, comparative offloading strategies, regional epidemiology and outcomes, MRI soft tissue changes and circulating bone markers in Charcot foot.
