The Amsterdam Public Health research institute (APH) aims to support, educate and guide the next generation of public health researchers. The PhD Education Committee safeguards the quality of PhD education within APH.
APH PhD candidates are appointed at different institutions, including Amsterdam UMC (consisting of AMC and VUmc), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). During their PhD trajectory, candidates follow courses and other educational activities to support their academic and professional development; the organization and requirements of this training differ per institution. This page provides relevant information for APH PhD candidates and—for those for whom this applies—directs them to the educational requirements for their Training Plan and Portfolio.
Registration at the Doctoral School (Amsterdam UMC: AMC and VUmc)
All APH PhD candidates appointed at Amsterdam UMC (AMC and VUmc) must register their PhD trajectory through the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School with an Amsterdam UMC email account.
Registration in Hora Finita
Hora Finita is the digital system used to administer and monitor PhD trajectories. All VU PhD candidates must register in Hora Finita. For specifically VUmc candidates, Hora Finita registration is initiated via the Doctoral School. After initial registration, candidates will be requested to provide additional information and documentation. The registration becomes official after approval by several parties, including the APH PhD Education Committee (below).
Doctoral School PhD Plan
After registration at the Doctoral School, Amsterdam UMC PhD candidates receive an invitation to complete their DS PhD plan with their supervisor and submit it to the Doctoral School. The PhD candidate should use the template that corresponds with the research institute they are primarily affiliated with. See more information here. The APH template includes the DS PhD plan and the APH Training Plan addendum (see below).
APH Training Plan
According to doctoral regulations, VU/VUmc PhD candidates must complete at least 30 EC of training. One EC equals 28 hours of workload. The Training Plan should be completed at the start of the PhD trajectory and outlines planned courses and professional development activities. The Training Plan is reviewed by the APH PhD Education Committee, specifically for APH PhD candidates from VUmc and the Health Sciences department of the VU Faculty of Science.
APH PhD Education Guide
For a complete overview of all requirements for the Training Plan, consult the APH PhD Education Guide.
- VUmc candidates: Complete DS PhD Plan including the APH Training Plan addendum with their supervisor and submit it via Hora Finita (box ‘tsp’)
- VU Health Sciences candidates: Complete the APH Training Plan with their supervisor and submit it to the VU Health Sciences PhD coordinator
The APH PhD Education Committee then assesses the Training Plan. See this example for a correctly filled Training Plan.
Hora Finita Portfolio
Once the PhD trajectory is officially registered in Hora Finita, APH PhD candidates must include completed courses and activities in their Hora Finita Portfolio. At the final stage of the PhD, VU and VUmc candidates request a portfolio review through Hora Finita. After approval by the APH PhD Education Committee, a certificate is awarded.
APH PhD Education Committee
The APH PhD Education Committee is responsible for maintaining education quality within APH. The committee’s main tasks include:
- Reviewing Training Plans and 30 EC Portfolios
- Advising the APH Board on education and supervision of APH PhD candidates
- Introducing APH and its educational policies to new PhD candidates
- Supporting PhD candidates during their trajectory
